A couple of months ago, I heard a rumor that FSU may be changing the iconic Chief Osceola logo at the spring game this year. I, as were most of the fan base, were abhorred at the possibility of changing it. Why would they change something with such tradition? What’s the need?

So, I began waiting and dreading the news. I went out and bought a hat and t-shirt with the logo to prepare for the change. I went through the denial stage, because they wouldn’t actually change the logo. However, we have now found out, that the logo is changing and the face of the program is new.

The outrage continues, but I am not one of them. I am actually ok with the change for a few reasons, and ok with the logo from a design standpoint for other reasons.
I’m ok with the change because:
- With the logo has come a standardization of the garnet and gold that FSU uses (matching my closet by color will be easier)
- The Seminole head has been slowly downgraded as the visible logo of FSU, this should fix that
- It unifies an existing typography logo (“FSU”) with the Seminole head
- It’s still a Seminole head
I’m ok with the design:
- The lines are more clean
- The feather is a feather and the “FSU” is legible versus the old “Florida State”
- He actually looks like he is screaming a war cry
- The thicker gold border
- Removal of the “fly-aways” on the back of his head
Overall, I think the logo is a good upgrade. If this logo helps Florida State position themselves better for marketability and increases revenue, fan base, and recruiting; how could I complain? I believe this will move Florida State forward, and lest we forget, FSU made their spot on the map by being willing to jump out, be flashy, and embrace the change.
So embrace the change and Go Noles!!!
Now we only have to worry about the new uniforms.
EDIT: Shortly after the posting, FSU baseball coach Mike Martin provided a comment.
Mike Martin closes press conference with unsolicited logo comment. Encourages fans to get on same page, realize the logos mean same thing.

Full quote:
“Being a guy that has been around Florida State for a couple of years, I’ve been one that loves this university dearly, as much as anybody, and I’ve looked at both logos for a long time, and in my opinion if you start at both logos, they still mean the same thing: Florida State. Unconquered. That’s our logo, that’s nobody else’s logo, that our dadgum logo. I’m proud of the new logo and I want everybody to know, that as a Seminole for the last 50 years, I want us to all be on the same page, move on, we have a great university, we’ve worked together, and we need all of our alumni and friends to stare at those logos and realize it’s Florida State, and that’s really all that matters.”
